Following up my comments about discipling my children I thought it would be good to record my day mainly to remind myself what my thoughts really look like.
Today we planned to go on a family tour of a few of the local tourist spots. We had a few reasons for doing this. One, our 12yo son has planned a week of visiting local attractions as a planning assignment I had given him. Two, I want to take photos of the area for my grandmothers 90th birthday. She is never going to get to this remote part of the country so an album will help her see where I live.
But none of that happened . Instead we had some table time where the 3 oldest worked on some notebook pages. 12yo son did some research on pantheism / paganism especially in connection to slavery. 10yo daughter related the lessons learnt from Sauls disobedience and not killing all the Agagites Haaman was an Agagite! 8yo daughter wrote 2 narrations on 2 dog stories she has recently read, along with 2 copy draws of those dogs. 6yo son did a colouring-in of David and Goliath and later in the day I was able to encourage him to pray, just like David did, when big things seem too hard (he was disappointed that he couldnt juggle but after thinking about David and praying he gave it a shot!)
So all in all we had a great day together. Plus we all learnt flexibility!
Hi!
I'd be interest in a little info on the study your 12 yr old did, how those beliefs/worldviews contributed ti slavery. My boys have been interested in studying slaverly lately.
Sounds like a good day, all in all. Learning to love and obey God is the best lessons we can teach. When we get to heaven, God's not going to ask how advanced we were in math or how early we learned to read.
I haven't seen his finished written piece yet but I know he did a few searches on google for pantheism – after which he decided you couldn't presume pantheism and paganism necessarily had the same view on slavery. His research was largely an exercise in discerning which websites would come from his worldview. In our discussions as he read bits and pieces he came to a point that he would look at the argument for abandoning slavery and see the opposite of that view would be why you would adhere to slavery. At this point he drew on what he has already formulated in his mind rather than spend more time on research. Since we have little (some but little) slavery history in our country (Australia) his thinking was inspired from a story re St.Augustine and how the Bible deals with slavery. I believe the most benefit from his time thinking about this came from our discussions rather than his writing but I will ask him if I can post anything he writes here once he has finished especially if it would help/encourage your boys to continue their studies.
