I have been reminded this morning, of two things I want to discuss with my children. I am sure for some this will be revision and for others it will be a new lesson….
- When you visit someone’s house you must say hello to the adults first (even if you’ve gone there to play with the kids) This sounds obvious, and maybe it is, but …. How easy it is to get focused on what we want to do and forget the common courtesies we have supposedly learnt.
- Opening doors and offering seats. These manners/courtesies start with Mother and sisters. Then, there are our friends we meet through the week. Then, one day you will have the opportunity to honour a stranger!
I have recently purchased “Polite Moments” and will be using this to gently bring these courtesies to the fore – we can know all the manners in the world in our heads but unless they are brought to our attention to practice it never reaches honour – it is nothing more than knowledge.
