Wednesday
The day started with everyone doing his or her discipline
studies particularly Math and Writing.
During this time Daniel was trying to make a wooden sword. He had drawn a point on the wood and was
trying to cut it with a hacksaw. Hard
work! He wanted me to help him. Hard work!
My thought was that now was the time to put into practice the few
lessons I had with the power saw. So I
headed for the shed, felt very overwhelmed but in 15 minutes remembered enough of my lessons to cut a point on a
piece of wood and cut a cross-bar for the handle of his sword. Josh helped Daniel do the rest find the
middle of the wood and screw it on.
Daniel was making this sword for Josh (even though Josh and myself did
most of the work!!!) so that the two of them can have sword fights.
After morning tea we discussed our Character trait
Determination. We discussed the lessons
learnt from the hurricane video they watched yesterday. Apparently it is the rain that loosens the
soil that makes everything so susceptible to the hurricane winds. Jessica likened this to the little steps,
the short-term goals, that we need to take in order to reach our long-term
goal. We also discussed determination
in terms of putting one foot in front of the other. We concluded our discussion looking at other traits that we need
to keep in balance when we set ourselves to be determined over an issue or
project.
For our Discussion studies Joshua read his book, Banker to
the Poor, Jessica worked on her Egypt work, mainly on tombs and tomb thieves,
Nomi began a notebook page on The Horse and His Boy which she has finished reading recently. Daniel and I started a new FIAR study, The
Salamander Room. We discussed habitat
a general introduction in preparation for more study later in the week. We went outside and stood still and then
later on recorded what we saw and heard.
We initially went outside to see some mushrooms that I had seen earlier
in the day they were gone! I didnt
know mushrooms disappeared with the heat of the day. Our notebooking for his FIAR was a vocab book, and 2 lists (what
I saw/heard). He also photocopied the
book cover to make the cover page for this unit.
Daniel had his speech therapist appointment this
afternoon.
Jess cleaned out the fridge for me.
Nomi is in the middle of a science experiment with having
various nature specimens soaking in coloured water. She wants to see which ones take up the colour and then she is to
think how that happened.
Mid afternoon I took Jessica and Liesa into town, armed with
their Pizza Party Shopping lists. We
had a mini-confab just to make sure we were all thinking the same ingredients
and quantities and with a reminder to shop wisely, to compare prices between
brands they went their way and I went mine.
They did very well. Now for the
cooking tomorrow!
