Last week was fairly broken up by a trip Nomi and I made to Darwin. Nomi turned 10 last weekend. We have a tradition that when the children turn 10 we give them a “unique” experience. This has meant a trip to Darwin (closest capital city) for each of them.
Josh went to Darwin to watch an International Cricket Game. It was very exciting for him as they stayed in the same motels as the two cricket teams (different motel each night) and met some of the Cricketers.
We took Jess to Darwin for a shopping spree. Doesn’t sound quiet so wholesome does it! But it was a great experience for her. We just don’t see that many shops in one place here where we live. She had money to spend so she had to deal with decisions such as choice, value, wants. We also dined a few times at a Restaurant and though we do that as a family occasionally this was another opportunity for her to practice manners and to act the lady. Jess and I spent lots of time just hanging together – walking the esplanade, having a coffee/milkshake, reading and watching a video.
Naomi was so excited that her tenth birthday was coming and she would get a trip to Darwin too. It was interesting for me as the parent in taking her to Darwin as I wanted the trip to be unique for Nomi and yet Nomi saw things that Jess did as the tradition and she wanted part of that!
Nomi also had money to spend. She wanted to buy a nice silver necklace (just like Jess did). I was very pleased to see though that her own style and taste came out in her choice. Jessica and Nomi are poles apart – Jess is classical and feminine, Nomi is arty and more sporty.
We went to the movies and saw “Happy Feet”. We also dined in restaurants and played ladies (a bit of a giggle for Nomi-Mae)
I was blessed with Nomi’s heart during our shopping time – she was more concerned that we got a present for everyone than she was about spending all her money.
Daniel is lining his unique experience up – he wants to go snow ski-ing!!!! I don’t think this is going to happen!
Hey – it's not THAT far to travel to the Victorian Snow – and not that far to free accomodation!! Daniel's plans sound pretty great to me!! Ham'G
