A few mornings back, we had some friends drop in for a play date before school began for that family.
Peter (dh who is a vet) had an client drop in with a couple of ponies, one of which needed de-sexing. After Pete did the prep he asked the kids if they wanted to come out and watch. They did of course. So us two mums stood their bravely, both for Pete’s sake, to keep the kids at the right distance, but also to ask any of those questions that we were sure were going to come up!
They all watched with great interest. They were so absorbed they really didn’t make many comments – well, not much more than ugh! Gross!, ooooew! Pete explained a few thing such as how he was stopping the blood flow. The best comment was from one of the visitors who is 4yo,
“That will never happen to me!” We assured him it wouldn’t!
Before the pony woke up Pete also counted his teeth to age him, and pulled his wolf teeth which apparently get in the way if he is going to have a bridle in his mouth. He also cleaned mud out of his hoof so they could discuss what needed to happen with shoe-ing.
So all in all, the kids had an amazing opportunity to see a vet at work on a horse on our backyard lawn!
