The combined churches of the town run an outreach programme called Mainly Music and Jessica has offered to help out over the next few terms as some of the main team members are pregnant and can’t make it as regularly. Last time she went there weren’t very many kids or mums so there wasn’t a lot for her to do – not so today. She was kept plenty busy and looks forward to helping out again. When I asked her why she enjoyed herself – it was looking after the little kids and helping them have fun.
Later in the afternoon the kids sat down and listened to the next Australian History CD. I allow the younger ones to do something with their hands while they are listening; this makes it more like story time and less like a lesson. The older two are taking notes so they need to be sitting at their desks. Next week we will work on further research and writing (Notebook pages). We are using two sets of Cd’s – The Story of Australia as our spine and Australian Nation Builders as support stories. Today’s story was on John Macarthur.
Over dinner a little conflict arose as there was a difference of opinion about the balance of creation – how finely tuned is the placement of the earth to the sun and moon. After the dishes the kids and Peter sat down and watched a video from Answers in Genesis which cleared it all up. Though conversation got intense it was a good time to learn to respect other people’s thoughts (even if we thought they were wrong) and to give people space to think things through (even if you think it is a simple thing).
