Not a lot to say – we had a really busy weekend which kept Daniel occupied and not at a loose end. He has been quicker to respond to my calling his name – a happy, chirpy “Yes Mum” is so delightful to hear. Especially when he turns up with the same happy, chirpy expression on his face!
He is still asking for a video/computer time but it is early in the day, and in a sense he is confirming that I am going to give him that time during the day. He is finding other things to do with his time. The pull isn’t so strong though it is still there. I don’t mind him having his ½ hour a day on the computer but if even that ½ hour deters him from using the rest of his time wisely then it is not a good thing.
Boot camp on Monday
Daniel woke early this morning and my morning routine is pretty much focused on what I need to do rather than on the kids. Our family rule is that it needs to be pretty quiet till 7.00am (though we all wake up between 5-6.00am) with the idea of respecting people’s individual quiet times. People still get things done but there is no music, and we need to be considerate of people when we talk. So when Daniel woke up at 5.30 he was expected to have quiet table time. He set himself up at colouring in and reading at the lounge coffee table. He actually needed to be told to pack it away and have food!
I took the opportunity to praise him for his focusing and diligence at table time. (Re-iterated what table time was)
It is at this time, where I start to feel some success and change in Daniel that I need to revisit my goals, my plan etc and prepare myself to keep going. It is so easy to stop at this point and yet there is a big habit of heart (in Daniel) that is going to take longer than a week to change. It isn’t that I want to break his habit – I want to replace it with another.
So just to see a change in him is not what I am aiming for – though it is very encouraging – I want to see him choosing a new way of spending his time all the time.
Belinda…thanks so much for posting these boot camp postings. They are really giving me some encouragement and concrete direction in answer to prayer about some needed work with one of our children. I especially appreciated what you said about not just wanting to *break* habits…but wanting to replace them with new, good habits. That is so what it is all about…getting them in the habit of making right choices…and yet it is so easy to lose focus of that in just trying to deal with specific behaviors. I will be continuing to watch these posts!
