Earlier this week Peter and I had an opportunity to fly out bush for a day. We have some friends who live on a very remote property – you can take 4-5 days to walk in or you can fly in. We chose to fly in! They wanted Pete to check out a few of their horses and I went to have a visit. We have wanted to visit them for about 14 years!!! Friends had our kids and off we went.
As I said, you have to fly in so Pete flew us to one airstrip and our friend picked us up in his plane and flew us 5minutes over to the homestead strip.

These people live it basic – they have solar power but only for the necessities of life – no airconditioner! In one way it was the wrong time of the year for me to visit – me being a softie who likes her airconditioner but the day we visited it was a bit cooler – around 35 degrees I think and there was a breeze which was nice. The day we left it hit 40 and you sure can tell the difference!
This is a photo of the main living area – kitchen, dining, lounge, veranda. As you can see it is all open living – the walls just lift up like big flaps, letting in all the breeze you can but when lowered become weather proof against the strong rains. Each of the bedrooms are separate little ‘shacks’.
Since we weren’t expecting any rain, they prepared their guest quarters for us which was about 500m away from the main homestead, settled into the bush.
Our quarters consisted of a shack with a kitchenette
(gas burner, kettle and the makings for tea),
a bed, set out under the stars, with a mozzie net
and an ensuite (which you can’t see in the photo above,
but check out the next photo!
Yep! Open on one side, open to the bush but overlooking the airstrip and down towards the main homestead. Full amenities – shower (hot water from the sun!) and flushing loo!
Here’s a close up of our bed – it was wonderful sleeping out under the stars.
I just love the ‘look’ of this – it is pure country!
In the afternoon we headed to their waterhole for a swim –
since it was a no-fishing zone we swum amongst the fish
It’s not the best photo but you can see the type of countryside alla round us.
This swimming hole was long enough for us to swim laps in.
An incredible view at sunrise
final flyover as we say goodbye!
You can see the homestead nestled in the middle of the green
What a wonderful blessing from God – to be able to visit this wonderful place and friends. The photos are absolutely spectacular, and it is probably better in real life.
May the Lord continue to bless you into 2010,
Jillian

the toilet in the open air and bed under the stars are what struck me! close to home, since that could seriously be our reality in the future!
