Character is what we do when no-one is watching. We do right because it is right. It is the basis of all relationships, life-skills and learning. Our character, the standard of behaviour that we hold to, will affect every aspect of our life. It will drive every daily decision we make.
When you show character, people begin to respect you. After time, that respect grows into trust which develops into a relationship. When you have relationships with people, you have influence into their lives – influence is leadership. This progression is true for every relationship you wish to build.
It is character that makes its mark regardless of position or skill. It is a lack of character that brings a man down. Grandad Letchford impressed upon his children – “Without integrity a man is not worth a cracker!”
We must remember though that we are not saved by our good works – good character won’t get you into heaven. We are saved by the grace of God, our sins are forgiven because of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Our good character is to be an outworking of walking in the spirit, becoming more and more like Christ.
I am writing 31 days of Heart Conversations to document 31 important truths I want to make sure I pass onto my children. Is today’s topic something you want to talk to your kids about? Do it today! Your words may well be different than mine but these truths will shape our children’s lives forever.
