Prayer is simply talking to and listen to God. Our relationship with God will be strengthened by spending time talking to each other. We need to talk to God about everything – our concerns, our dreams, our disappointments, and the things that excite us.
People ask – why talk to God – He already knows everything! I believe there are a few reasons for prayer:
- When we take things to God in prayer it is recognising our dependence on God, who he is and that He is in control.
- When we take things to God it takes our eyes off of ourselves (our problems and our wants) and puts our focus onto God and who He is
- It invites God into our lives. God gives us free will and choice, and though He has complete power to do as He wills, He likes to be invited into our life and circumstances.
One of my favourite hymns is:
What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
