Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for the man. That means the Sabbath, a day of rest, does something for man. Rest is a pause in our regular activities where we recharge so that we are ready to go with the tasks at hand.
We are created body, soul and spirit and we need to recharge body, soul and spirit. Often we think in terms of the physical body when we take rest, or spend leisure time, but it needs to be so much more. We also need to recharge our emotions, renew our relationships and rest our thinking. Our whole being needs to rest
Jesus told his disciples to take a moment of leisure – Mark 6:31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.
From this we can glean that rest involves
- getting away from the normal pressures
- eating food; relationships are strengthened around food!
- being with others – it isn’t necessarily a solitary thing.
We need to ensure we get rest for our whole being.
