Our time is a resource that God has given to us to use for His purposes. What are his purposes in your life? As a parent – raising our children is one of His purposes in our life. Do you have time for that? or does the crazy get in the way. A routine is when we repeat the same sequence of activities so often that it becomes a habit. When something becomes a habit, we don’t have to spend mental or emotional energy thinking about what needs to be done.
I found when I had a rhythm to our days (rhythm being another word for routine) I had less surprises, less mess, less angst, and I had more clarity to address the important things going on in our life, I had more peace in my own heart so I could speak calmly even in the middle of disruption. When I manage my time – both now, and when I was in the middle of directive parenting, I had time to deal with what was important instead of always living with the urgent.
You may not like the idea of routine – and that is okay (it isn’t natural for me either). But let me ask you one question – do you like what is going on in your family life right now and do you feel like you are all growing as you want to be? If not – managing your time by establishing some routines may well help get your family to a place where you can say yes to that question.

Think about it…

As a Christian I want a God-focused perspective on time. Time is a resource that God has given us – to use for his purposes. This verse reminds us to use time wisely.
Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), Making the very most of the time because the days are evil. Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:15-27
As a parent I took this verse to heart. I am to live differently as a mum, because Jesus has changed me. I am to use the time wisely, because the days are evil (and numbered). I have limited time to do the things that God has asked me to do as I raise my children.
Think about: What does this verse say to you? How do you apply it?

We cannot control time but we can use it. But so often time gets away from us, we lose time, we waste time. Instead, we need to use time.
We need to use time so we can achieve the things on our heart. We can use our time to
- Grow in our relationship with Jesus
- Nurture our marriage relationship
- Care for our own well being
- Raise our children
- Create a welcoming space in our home
- Love others in practical ways
- Develop skills and interests so we engage in life
the list goes on…
We have a choice though – will we use the time we have been given to glorify God and live in a way that reflects what He has done for me…. or will I serve my own purposes and just do whatever I feel like in the moment.
