How to deal with Interruptions

Interruptions in parenting are inevitable—whether it’s a meltdown, a sudden change in plans, or an emotional moment you have to help your child process.

These moments feel frustrating, even overwhelming especially when we have things to do in our day.

But what if we stopped seeing interruptions as interruptions and started seeing them as opportunities to nurture our children’s hearts?

It is usually in these moments of interruption that our child needs us. Are we prepared to be there for them – to teach, encourage, help, guide or to simply love them.

In this episode, we talk about the mindset shift that can change how you respond to these messy moments. Spoiler alert: It’s not about abandoning your plans—it’s about knowing what’s most important right now.

Seek First His Kingdom - even in our Family

As parents, it’s easy to get caught up in the to-do lists, schedules, and daily routines. We often feel the pressure to manage everything perfectly, from schoolwork to soccer practice and meal plans. But in the midst of all that doing, God gently reminds us: “Seek me first.”

✨ What if we focused more on eternal values than finishing everything on our to do list or getting through our daily plan?

✨ What if we let our focus on pursuing God and His Kingdom – even His Kingdom in our family – bring peace to our hearts when we realise we have different priorities than other people in our community?

We can’t do it all in this life – but we can seek first His kingdom and all that means.

Parenting with eternity in mind doesn’t mean we ignore our responsibilities, but it does mean trusting that God will meet us, even in the chaos. Let today be the day we shift our priorities toward Him. 💛

What are your Priorities?

A heart-focused Christian parent has these priorities. Do you agree?

Remember our goal in our parenting is to parent the heart of our child, to encourage and help them to grow into maturity – in all spheres of their life. The routine, or our plans, are the context we create so that we have opportunity to teach the heart. And though there are things that need to happen in our day – ultimately it is our children’s hearts that matter more.

A Goal is Helpful

My goal was to parent the heart of our child (their beliefs and values), and to encourage and help them to grow into maturity – in all spheres of their life (spiritual, moral, emotional, social, intellectual, physical).

Whether you know it or not, you have a goal for your parenting. Is it just to grow them up and get them to have a job or is it to feed them until they leave home? Is it to have nice children? Good children? What is your goal?

What is important to you as you parent your kids?

When we are clear on our goal, it gives us purpose. It paints a big picture for when we get overwhelmed with all the details.

It gives us direction helps us to know what to focus on.

It gives us encouragement because we can look at the right areas to see growth in our kids.

In a world that tells us achievements and winning and being the best with the most is what is important. It is important that we keep focused on what God says is important and that is the heart and a relationship with him.

Reminder: Focus on the right goal

Though a routine is a helpful tool to manage all the tasks we have to do and all the activities we want to do – the reality is our real goal is to parent the heart of our child – so don’t get distracted by the activities.

Keep your focus on the right goal today.

Do you have a routine to your day, or a plan for you and your kids? What happens when that gets interrupted?
